A wine shop that not only offers a wide array of natural wines but is also founded on a commitment to solidarity
One year ago, Casa Emergency, the new offices of the eponymous association founded by Gino Strada and his life partner Teresa, opened in Milan. The building, an old abandoned school from the 1940s, was given new life by a redevelopment project. From a vision of desolation and abandonment, it blossomed into a “place of culture and debate on peace”, giving concrete expression to the conviction that solidarity and human warmth come first.
This new vision has now been expanded to include e/n Enoteca Naturale, a wine shop that not only offers a wide array of natural wines but is also founded on a commitment to solidarity. Like a young paladin, it promotes social inclusion for those applying for political asylum and supports Emergency with a portion of its sales.
Out of an austere place devoted to lectures emerged the basic need to throw open those metaphorical windows to fill it with fresh air, letting in warmth and a friendly feel. Gradations of burgundy mix with petroleum and midnight blue hues and natural materials like wood, glass and marble, all in a minimal style.
The building is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Milan: the pedestrian-only zone of Via Santa Croce, facing onto the basilica of Sant’Eustorgio. Entering the space, you find yourself in a large room overlooking the building’s garden.
The main room is dotted with small round and square tables, leading the eye to a majestic Air Wildwood table with a centuries-old oak top that conjures up far-off memories and tempered glass legs that create material contrast. The space is completed with colourful Lastika armchairs and School chairs, designs that stimulate conversation, since the best ideas come out of chats in the classroom.
Just beyond two columns in iron and wood, used to display the winery’s products, we find a seven-metre counter made up of vertical wooden strips, finished in cement. Topped by a Carrara marble surface. Behind the counter, birch wood panelling proudly displays the fine bottles.
After reading about this project, you are sure to want to go enjoy a glass of wine in this space, where Pokerbeb meets solidarity.
